Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice

HSRPP Brighton 2009

The 2009 Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice conference was hosted by the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Brighton on 30th and 31st March 2009. The theme for the Conference was 'Focusing on health and the older generation'. The venue for the Conference was the Sallis Benney Theatre which is part of the Grand Parade complex of the University of Brighton.

Following the Conference welcome, two very different plenary lectures set the 'ageing' scene. Dr Richard Faragher of the University of Brighton spoke with some humour about the role of basic science in understanding ageing. This was followed by David and Diane Andrewes from the Eastleigh Southern Parishes Older People's Forum who spoke about their research work and findings with a local population. The publication 'Pills and Perils' (PDF 1.8MB) is available to downlaod.

A PhD Forum ran in parallel with these lectures and provided researchers with an opportunity to explore their early work with senior researchers. The remainder of the first day was given to parallel presentation sessions with the themes of Education: curriculum development, Beliefs and behaviour, Community pharmacy, Education: the student, Patient perspective and Hospital pharmacy. This was followed by a tour of the famous Royal Pavilion and a Conference Dinner held at the Thistle Hotel.

Tuesday morning opened with another PhD Forum and plenary lecture. The latter was given by Dr Juliet Wright from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and covered medical aspects of ageing (Elderly Medicine, the road ahead - PowerPoint 2.8MB). This was followed by the poster sessions and further parallel oral presentations with the themes of working practice, Medicine use in the elderly, Optimising Care, Professionalism, Patient safety and Medicine use reviews.

A total of 34 oral presentations were given and 13 posters presented. The abstracts from the 2009 conference are available in a special supplement of the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice (IJPP Vol 17, Suppl. 1, 2009 - PDF 2.7MB). There were also 8 presentations in the PhD Forum.
